Description
Porto Sant'Angelo is situated in the namesake village within the municipality of Serrara Fontana, on the southern shore of Ischia Island.
The port enjoys the good shelter offered by the outer and inner breakwaters against western winds.
The structure presents a 110-metre-long quay equipped with mooring bollards, flanked by a main 50-metre-long pier. In summer, the structure is enlarged by two additional floating piers, placed in the middle of the port and parallel to the beach.
Piers are managed by some private societies while the dock, situated just behind the inner breakwater, is run by the City Hall.
The port is perched on the foot of the namesake promontory (called "The Tower"), linked to the rest of the island by a narrow isthmus. Moreover, the islet offers a natural protection from western winds.
The structure offers a plurality of services, included a taxi boat, medical assistance and a grocery shop. In the villlage, visitors can easily find some bars, restaurants, stores, luxury shops and hotels.
In the close square of Cava Grado ( an enchanting sandy beach surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation) there is a bus stop, very useful to reach the surrounding municipalities of Barano, Lacco Ameno, Casamicciola, Forio and the main port of the island.
The village of Sant'Angelo is one among the few hill places of Ischia. Very appreciated by tourists, it is very crowded in summer. Consequently, if you don't find any place here, you can drop the anchor just out of the port or inside the bay of Maronti.
The port of Sant'Angelo faces the Bay of Maronti which, in addition to an excellent shelter, offers a charming long beach (3 km) and the popular thermal source of Cava Scura.
Thermal sources, well-known all around the world, are, in fact, one of the main attractions of Ischia. Near the port but separated from it, raises the bay of Sorgeto. Reachable only by land or through a long steep staircase, the bay offers some natural pools and hot water in all seasons.
Visitors can't miss the Aragonese Castle, built on an ancient Greek fortress by Alfonso IV of Aragon, and Mortella, the gardens offering a wonderful view on Forio.
